The Supremes were a very successful Motown all-female singing group active from 1959 until 1977, performing at various times doo-wop, pop, soul, Broadway showtunes, psychedelia, and disco.
One of Motown's signature acts, The Supremes were the most successful African-American musical act of the 1960s[1], recording twelve American number-one hits between 1964 and 1969. Many of these singles were written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland-Dozier-Holland. The crossover success of the Supremes during the mid-1960s paved the way for future black soul and R&B acts to gain mainstream audiences both in the United States and overseas.
Founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1959, The Supremes began as a quartet called The Primettes. Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglas public housing project in Detroit, were the sister act to The Primes (later The Temptations). In 1960, Barbara Martin replaced McGlown, and the group signed with Motown in 1961 as The Supremes. Martin left at the end of 1961, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio. After they achieved success in the mid-1960s with Ross as the lead singer, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & the Supremes in 1967, and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. Ross left the group for a successful solo career in 1970, and was replaced by Jean Terrell. After 1972, the lineup of the Supremes changed frequently, with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene all becoming members before the group ended its eighteen-year existence in 1977

It is very interesting how the Flo fans carry her jealousy - the same jealousy which ultimately proved to be her undoing - very interesting indeed.

That is complete bull. Flo never had what it takes to be a standout solo artist, period. No one held her back,no one undermined her great potential,etc. She did not have the voice,look,stage presence,DRIVE,STAMINA, DETERMINATION, and WORK ETHIC of Diana Ross - and that's just the fact.

And yes, I'm well aware that she had a drinking habit as well as other personal problems in those days. Taking all of that into consideration I just believe with the correct collaboration (H-D-H, the funk brothers) she would have out done Diana Ross. And I know that that's saying a lot.

Everyone here has good points, but I believe if Berry Gordy put the effort of promoting Florence as a solo artist after she left the group as he later put into Diana Ross then Florence would have been unstoppable. Anyone who have never heard Florence Ballard's voice as a solo artist ought to, she was sensational. And she should have had more singing leads as a member of the Supremes as well. I think Motown made a grave error on that.

Thats Because cindy was a second soprano which is the reason she didnt sound as good...but she helped because if diana took the lead she could sing over her and if mary took a lead(rare) she could sing under her...i think she was underated but my favorite is mary with her brassy and sultry voice and style

IF FLORENCE HAD NEVER SUNG AT THE TALENT SHOW SHE DID SHE NEVER WOULD HAVE BEEN ADVISED TO FORM A GROUP AND NO ONE WOULD KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT DIANA BUT FLORENCE STILL WOULD HAVE BEEN A SINGER!!!!!!
And tevtev92 is definately right as well the harmonies don't sound half as good without Flo. Berry Gordy obviously noticed as after Flo was fired many of The Supremes songs had The Andantes on backing.
